I used to avoid drawing flowers, but now they’re one of my favorite subjects! Since I’ve started drawing them more often, I’ve learned a few things, and I’d like to share them with you.
Thanks for the article, James! I'll keep practicing! It's hard for me sometimes to draw loosely, especially when the flower didn't look like the actual one 😅
I was inspired by you to loosely sketch (and paint) statice. I was critical of my work at first, but now love all three versions. I have a problem with too much detail - I am definitely an over-thinker. This practice will help me work on that. Thank you!!
I adore no. 1 - draw more flowers! The one thing we forget when trying to get better at something is to just do lots of it!! 😅How many times have I made that mistake! 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you for this useful advice. I found this article to be really inspiring! It helped me see the difference between taking pictures of flowers and drawing flowers.
Thanks for the great reminder to relax while sketching and painting, and practice is huge, too. Loved this.
Thanks, Mary! 😊
My son gave me an “assignment” to make a painting. Luckily, I got your post! I need it.
I love the idea of keeping the pen to paper & less lines. I'm doing that in the morning!
Have fun!

Ha! The important part is that you have fun and just keep drawing! ☺️
Thank you for your great advice! You definetly made me want to draw flowers. And eventually stitch them.
Haha, thanks for reading!
Thank you… very useful post…
Thanks for reading!
What a great post, James! You have definitely inspired me to practice painting flowers.
My first attempt at orchids was a wonky, out of proportion disaster ... even if it was fun to use magenta straight out of the pot.
I will keep practicing now.
Have fun! 😊

That’s awesome, have fun with it!
For me, I love doing contour drawing and then filling in with color but definitely staying outside the lines. Your flowers are beautiful!
Thank you! 🙏
This is the best flower advice I’ve ever read.
You heard it here first, folks! 💪🏻
