Watching this was so relaxing, informative and inspiring ,James.

I’ll watch it again! As an aside — I grew up spending time in the Adirondacks, and have childhood memories of 13th Lake and that neck of the woods… my parents were good friends with the couple who owned Log House, ( now called Garner Hill Lodge) and we would stay there. I was very young, but I remember it so clearly!

Oh, wow, that’s amazing! It was my first time in the Siamese Ponds area—one of the cool things about the Adirondacks is how much there is to explore!

Wonderful James! Thanks! I prefer the sienna with paynes to yellow ochre too. I love a sketch, wash, and journal page—it's so visceral. The butterfly is lovely. All of it is. I think I'll do a post about the first page of an art journal. Your idea to go simple is refreshing. My first pages are quite busy like all my ideas and vibes on that first page. No wrong way to go though! What was the blue watercolor you switched to that you mentioned early in the vid?

Thanks, Maureen! I switched from indigo to indanthrone blue--I believe that indigo (at least the Daniel Smith one) is actually a mix of indanthrone blue and lamp black. I find that the indanthrone on its own is much more lively!

Yes, it looks brighter on the page. Thanks James. I’m loving the ten-minute challenge.

That’s awesome, thanks for joining!

Lovely. Thanks for sharing. How long do you have to keep the sketchbook open before the sketch is completely dry?

James O'Boyle's avatar

That depends on the paper, the medium, and even the weather! With this sketchbook, watercolors usually dry pretty quickly—maybe 10 minutes?

I enjoyed the tour but the pictures seem a bit bleached out … possibly my iPad or maybe filmed in strong sunlight.

James O'Boyle's avatar

Hmm, it was filmed in natural light and looks normal when I view it! I wonder if anyone else is having this issue?

My bad. Ive just checked it out on my laptop ... A feast for the eyes!

Thank you for the sketchbook tour! I really like that indanthrone blue. What sketchbook are you using?

James O'Boyle's avatar

Thanks! This is a Hahnemuhle watercolor sketchbook (not the 100% cotton one) in the A5 portrait size.
